Jeff Sessions Resigns As The Attorney General Of The United States

November 09, 2018, United States
Since assuming the federal reign, Trump administration has been going through a never-ending transition on key administrative roles. The president is often criticized for these abrupt terminations and nominations. However, the latest change among federal ranks has been celebrated by many, particularly the cannabis proponents of the country.
It has been confirmed that Jeff Sessions has resigned from the post of attorney general. The feud between the president and Sessions has been brewing for a long time. Man political experts had already indicated that Trump would eventually fire his attorney general.
It is also being said that Sessions resigned when it had become pretty evident that he was going to get fired. For that matter, many news outlets are reporting that ‘the attorney general is fired’. The language used in the resignation letter also backs this assertion. For instance, the line ‘At your request I am submitting my resignation’ gives away that it’s more of a forced resignation.

It is worth mentioning that Trump hasn’t picked any permanent nominee for this key post of the Department of Justice. For the time being, former chief of staff of Sessions, Matthew Whitaker is serving as an interim attorney general.
Jeff Sessions: Not Just a Cannabis Opponent but Racist Too
Cannabis advocates have celebrated the resignation because Jeff Sessions appeared as a strong opponent of cannabis legalization for any of its uses. Some experts have drawn parallels between its anti-cannabis obsession and reefer madness propaganda happened during the 1930s.
However, the hatred for Sessions is not just because of its adamant anti-marijuana stance. The man was also an unabashed racist. During his tenure as the attorney general, he gave many statements reeking of racism. For instance, he once said that he didn’t have any issues with KKK until he found that they smoked cannabis. Moreover, he also encouraged racially biased policies among law enforcement agencies by giving subtle hints of white supremacy in his statements.
On the other hand, his strong and extremely irrational detestation for cannabis and its legalization remained on display throughout his term. He has made several ridiculous statements about cannabis. Sessions even held marijuana responsible for the ongoing opioid epidemic of the country.

To make matters worse, his opposition to cannabis was not just limited to issuance of statements. In order to thwart the statewide progression of cannabis reforms, Sessions rescinded Cole Memo, a piece of legislation passed in the Obama era that protected statewide businesses from federal trespassing.
After the annulment of the Cole memo, statewide legal cannabis businesses have been exposed to federal crackdowns. No such crackdown has happened so far. But Sessions repeatedly warned with federal crackdowns just to keep the insecurity alive among the business owners entering a nascent industry.
Federal policies regarding cannabis are not going to change any time soon. However, with the departure of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, the industry has now one less enemy in the federal administration.
